Kia Optima: Engine Control System / Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS)

Kia Optima DL3 2019-2024 Service and Repair Manual / Engine Control / Fuel System / Engine Control System / Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS)

Description and operation
Description

Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS) is a hall sensor, which detects the camshaft position by using a hall element.

It is synchronized with Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS) and detects the piston position of each cylinder which cannot be detected by the CKPS.

The two CMPS are installed on engine head cover of bank 1 and 2 (intake, exhaust) respectively and use a target wheel installed on the camshaft.

The Camshaft Position Sensor is a hall-effect type sensor.

As the target wheel passes the Hall sensor, the magnetic field changes in the sensor.

The sensor then switches a signal which creates a square wave.

Repair procedures
Inspection
1.

The engine control system can be more quickly diagnosed for troubles by using the vehicle diagnostic system (KDS). (Refer to "DTC guide")

KDS provides the following information.

(1)

Self diagnosis : Inspects and displays diagnostic trouble code (DTC)

(2)

Sensor data : Checks the system input/output value status

(3)

Forced operation : Checks the system operating status

(4)

Additional function : Controls system options, zero point adjustment and other functions

Component Inspection
1.

Check signal waveform of CMPS using a KDS.

Specification : Refer to "DTC diagnostic guide"

Removal

DON’T remove the camshaft position sensor during engine running or right after engine stops, or a scald by the flowed out engine oil may occur.

[Intake]
1.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2.

Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector (A).

3.

Remove the camshaft position sensor after loosening the mounting bolt (B).

Tightening torque :

9.8 - 11.8 N·m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf·m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb·ft)

[Exhaust]
1.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2.

Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector (A).

3.

Remove the camshaft position sensor after loosening the mounting bolt (B).

Tightening torque :

9.8 - 11.8 N·m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf·m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb·ft)

Installation

Install the component to the specified torque.

Note that internal damage may occur if the component is dropped. In this case, inspect the component before installation.

Apply the engine oil to the O-ring.

1.

Install in the reverse order of removal.
