Kia Optima DL3: Engine Control System / Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS)

Description and operation

Description

Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS) detects the crankshaft position and is one of the most important sensors of the engine control system.

If there is no CKPS signal input, fuel is not supplied. That is, vehicle can't run without CKPS signal.

This sensor is installed on the cylinder block or the transaxle housing and generates alternating current by magnetic flux field which is made by the sensor and the target wheel when engine runs.

The target wheel consists of 58 slots and 2 missing slots on 360 degrees CA (Crank Angle).

Inspection
1.

The engine control system can be more quickly diagnosed for troubles by using the vehicle diagnostic system (KDS). (Refer to "DTC guide")

KDS provides the following information.

(1)

Self diagnosis : Inspects and displays diagnostic trouble code (DTC)

(2)

Sensor data : Checks the system input/output value status

(3)

Forced operation : Checks the system operating status

(4)

Additional function : Controls system options, zero point adjustment and other functions

Components Inspection
1.

Check signal waveform of CKPS using a KDS.

Specification : Refer to "DTC diagnostic guide"

Removal
1.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2.

Remove the engine room under cover.

(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Engine Room Under Cover")

3.

Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector (A).

4.

Remove the crankshaft position sensor (A) after loosening the mounting bolt.

Tightening torque :

9.8 - 11.8 N·m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf·m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb·ft)

Installation

Install the component with the specified torque.

Note that internal damage may occur when the component is dropped. In this case, use it after inspecting.

Apply the engine oil to the O-ring.

1.

Install in the reverse order of removal.

    Specifications Specification Temperature Resistance (kΩ) °C °F 45 113 244.

Description and operation Description • Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS) is a hall sensor, which detects the camshaft position by using a hall element.
